Michelson Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Apply by 2 November 2006

The Michelson Fellowship program invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships in exo-planet research or related field at a US institution. Fellowship applications proposing technology development and/or astronomical applications of optical/IR interferometry and/or coronagraphy are particularly encouraged; proposals relevant to the technology development or science of Navigator projects, both experimental and theoretical, will also be considered.

The annual award stipend will be about $54,500 with an additional research budget of up to $15,000 per year. Fellowships are awarded for two years with an optional third year, and must start no later than December 2007.

A Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, engineering or related discipline is required prior the start of the funding period. The application, including a statement of proposed research (not to exceed eight pages), curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference must be sent to Dr. Gerard van Belle by 2 November 2006. Applicants are required to contact their proposed host institution and to obtain a brief statement endorsing the proposed research, including name and address of a sponsoring faculty member.

Applications from previous and current Michelson Fellowship recipients are strongly discouraged; fellowship awards to former and current Michelson fellows will be granted only under exceptional circumstances.

The Michelson Fellowship program is sponsored by NASA's Navigator Program which includes the Keck Interferometer, Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer, Space Interferometry Mission, Terrestrial Planet Finder, and the Michelson Science Center. AAE/EOE.

To apply send a cover leter indicating your interest in applying for the Michelson Posdoctoral Fellowship and your application materials (a research proposal outlining the project to be completed during the funding period and a curriculum vitae) to the MSC. In addition, have your proposed faculty advisor send a letter in support of the application along the lines indicated below under separate cover. The research proposal and the support letter should include:

Curriculum Vitae of applicant with publication list.
Letter from Faculty Advisor (under separate cover):

Applicants are required to contact the proposed host institution and obtain a brief statement, including name and address of a sponsoring faculty member, endorsing the proposed research.
