Michelson Educational Awards

As a part of the 2004 Michelson Fellowship Program, we invite applications for Michelson Educational Awards. These awards are aimed at supporting undergraduate and graduate education, and specifically educators and institutions in the preparation and presentation of educational material relevant to Navigator Program science (e.g. exo-planet research) and/or technology. Awards are anticipated to be in the range of $35,000 -- $75,000, and shall not exceed two years in duration.

Successful applicants (either individuals or groups) are expected to be associated with an accredited undergraduate or graduate educational institution in the US for the term of the award, and will propose a detailed outline of the educational materials to be prepared (or other proposed activities), and a plan for how they are to be incorporated into ongoing or new educational opportunities for undergraduate or graduate students. Further, a discussion how the proposed course of study is relevant and beneficial to Navigator Program goals will be required of all applications. Applications from individuals or groups who are not currently supported by Navigator Program activities are particularly encouraged.

Examples of possible activities include preparation of coursework or written material relevant to Navigator Program science (e.g. exo-planet studies) or technology at either the undergraduate or gradaute level; participation of undergraduate or gradaute students in seminars or in small-scale observing progams or laboratory efforts focussed on Navigator Program science or technology; summer visits of students to JPL, MSC, or other foci of Navigator Program activities, etc.

The Michelson Fellowship program is sponsored by NASA's Navigator Program which includes the Keck Interferometer, Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer, Space Interferometry Mission, Terrestrial Planet Finder, and the Michelson Science Center. AAE/EOE.

Application Process

• Proposal (not more than six letter or A4 pages):
  • Proposed host institution.
  • What is the educational project? Discuss the scientific and/or technical rational.
  • A detailed outline of the educational materials to be developed/presented
  • A plan for how they are to be encorporated into ongoing or new educational opportunities for undergraduate or graduate students at the proposed host institution.
  • How does this proposal relate to the goals of the Navigator Program?
  • How does this proposal fit into the ongoing activities of the proposed host institution?
  • What are the expected results?
• Curriculum Vitae of applicant(s), with exactly one applicant designated as the proposal Principle Investigator (PI).
